IELTS vs CELPIP: Which Test Should You Take?

IELTS vs CELPIP: Which Test Should You Take?

If you are applying for Canadian permanent residence or citizenship, you need to prove your English ability with either IELTS General Training or CELPIP General. Both tests are accepted by IRCC, but they have important differences that could affect your score.

Format and Delivery

CELPIP is fully computer-based. You type your writing answers and record your speaking responses on the computer. IELTS General Training offers both paper-based and computer-based options. The speaking section is always a face-to-face interview with an examiner, regardless of which format you choose.

For some students, speaking to a computer feels less stressful because there is no human judgment in the moment. For others, the face-to-face IELTS interview feels more natural because they can read the examiner's reactions and adjust their answers. Think about which format suits your personality.

Accent and Context

CELPIP uses exclusively Canadian English. The listening recordings feature Canadian accents, and the topics relate to Canadian life (workplace scenarios, community events, Canadian news). If you are already living in Canada, this can be a significant advantage.

IELTS uses a mix of accents including British, Australian, American, and Canadian. The topics are more international. If you studied English in a British or Australian context, you may find IELTS listening more familiar.

Scoring

CELPIP scores map directly to CLB levels (1 through 12). IELTS uses band scores (1.0 to 9.0) that need to be converted to CLB. For example, IELTS Band 7 equals CLB 9, Band 6.5 equals CLB 8, and Band 6 equals CLB 7.

The conversion can sometimes work in your favor or against you. Some students find it easier to get a CLB 7 directly on CELPIP than to get the equivalent Band 6.0 on IELTS.

Cost and Availability

CELPIP costs approximately $280 CAD and is available only in Canada (with limited locations in India and the Philippines). Results are ready in 4 to 5 business days.

IELTS General Training costs between $310 and $340 CAD and is available in over 140 countries. Results take 13 days for paper-based and 3 to 5 days for computer-based.

Our Recommendation

If you are already in Canada: start with a CELPIP practice test. The Canadian content gives you a built-in advantage, and the fully computerized format means consistent scoring.

If you are applying from outside Canada: IELTS is your only realistic option since CELPIP has very limited international availability.
