What is CELPIP?
The Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) is Canada's leading general English language test, designed specifically for the Canadian context. It is fully computer-delivered (including the Speaking section), takes approximately 3 hours to complete, and is scored on the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) scale from 1 to 12.
CELPIP is accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for both permanent residence and citizenship applications. For Express Entry, you typically need CLB 7 (CELPIP 7) in all four skills. For Canadian citizenship, the minimum requirement is CLB 4 (CELPIP 4) in speaking and listening only. Because CELPIP uses Canadian English exclusively, test-takers who live in Canada or consume Canadian media often find the accents and vocabulary more familiar than those on other English proficiency tests.
Prepare for Each Section
Listening
47-55 min, 6 parts
Six distinct parts test your ability to understand short conversations, long conversations, and information from news items and discussions. You will hear each audio clip only once, so active listening is critical. Practice identifying main ideas, specific details, and speaker attitudes across everyday, workplace, and community topics.
Reading
55-60 min, 4 parts
Four parts cover reading correspondence (emails and letters), reading to apply a diagram (schedules, maps, signs), reading for information (longer articles and reports), and reading for viewpoints (opinion-based texts). Each part requires a different reading strategy, from scanning for details to comparing contrasting opinions. Timed practice is essential because many test-takers run out of time on the final part.
Writing
53-60 min, 2 tasks
Task 1 asks you to write an email (formal, semi-formal, or informal depending on the prompt). Task 2 asks you to respond to a survey question with a well-organized opinion. Both tasks are scored on content, coherence, vocabulary, and readability. We provide templates and personalized feedback so you know exactly where to improve.
Speaking
15-20 min, 8 tasks
All eight tasks are recorded at your computer (no live examiner). You will give advice, talk about a personal experience, describe a scene from a picture, make predictions about a situation, compare options and persuade, deal with a difficult situation, express opinions on a topic, and describe an unusual situation. The PREP framework (Point, Reason, Example, Point) helps you structure every response confidently.
